WHAT IS THIS SHOW?

Back in the day, a major sitcom doing a gay episode was a big deal. A proper gay episode would get headlines, but it also got the attention of two young guys who were still figuring things out — sexuality-wise and culture-wise. Gayest Episode Ever has screenwriter Glen Lakin and stay-at-home journalist Drew Mackie going through the great and not-so-great gay episodes of sitcoms past. Each week, Glen and Drew sit down to discuss one LGBT-focused episode of a classic sitcom and how it holds up or falls short all these years later.

WHO HOSTS THIS SHOW?

glen-lakin-gayest-episode-ever.png

Glen Lakin failed miserably at his mother’s aspirations that he become a plastic surgeon. Instead, he studied film and screenwriting at Northwestern University and the American Film Institute. Despite misplacing his diplomas, Glen enjoys developing content for movies and TV, with his first feature film, BEING FRANK, releasing in theaters in 2019. Please ask about his other unproduced scripts... Please.

Once upon a time, Drew Mackie used to write for newspapers. Today, he talks instead of writes, capitalizing on a childhood spent in front of the TV, watching a lot of old movies and TV shows. He has a dog, Thurman, and also a mustache, which is not yet named. Because he believes podcasts can’t be too niche, he also hosts Singing Mountain, which is about video game music. No, really.

Hi. Gayest Episode Ever is a podcast about gay TV — specifically the one-off, LGBT-themed episodes that classic sitcoms would do back in the day, when it was rare to see queer characters represented on broadcast television. The show is hosted by Drew Mackie (a journalist) and Glen Lakin (a screenwriter). It’s part of TableCakes, a Los Angeles-based, woman-owned network of podcasts.

You can listen to Gayest Episode Ever on iTunes, on Google Play, on Spotify. Check out all our episodes so far here. If you like, pledge a buck or two on our Patreon. And we have some merch that doesn’t suck, we swear!

Also… do you like trailers with forced banter? Because you’re in luck!

Since you're apparently subscribed to the feed already, you don't have to listen to this new teaser for what GEE is all about. You *can* listen to it, but you don't have to. This is for promotional purposes only. Support us on Patreon!

HERE, Listen To These

"Vince Meat" (February 22, 2020) Have you seen that one Golden Girls where Blanche accidentally sexes a man to death and the girls have to hide the body? Well, your answer should be no, because that episode didn't air back in the day.

“Glen Writes a Golden Girls”

Finally, the Golden Girls about murder and cannibalism that you’ve always wanted!

"I Never Ate for My Father" (October 2, 1991) When Robbie Sinclair fails to kill his first live prey, he begins to wonder if he might be more herbivorously oriented - and that fits in really well with this episode's extensive use of vegetarianism as a metaphor for homosexuality.

“I Never Ate for My Father”

Yes, Dinosaurs holds the record for the closest-to-explicitly queer TGIF episode ever.

"As the Will Turns" (April 10, 1995) This is as close to a gay episode as Fresh Prince of Bel-Air ever got. And while it's not necessarily the funniest piece of TV ever, it makes for a hell of a discussion of Will Smith's personal life.

“As the Will Turns”

A very strange, very autobiographical Fresh Prince puts Will Smith in a surprising position.
